Once My Ally

Message from the artist:

This piece titled "Once my Ally" is exploring the relationship between a person and their reflection in a mirror. Depending on life's circumstances how that image could be suffocating or it could be liberating. We as a society tend to conform to a set standard of beauty and often compare ourselves to more "desirable" people around us. How does an object, a mirror have such a hold on how so many people feel and how they see themselves.

When I'm choreographing I start with finding the right piece of music that matches the concept I'm working towards and has inspired me to move in a specific way. ! need to be in awe of what I'm listening to. Then I listen to that track over and over until I make a phrase. From there the rest falls in place the way it should. Working with dancers that really understand their bodies and how they like to move personally makes the process so easy. We're creating the work together and then soon enough we have a piece. A lot of the time I choreograph in the room and do not have anything planned beforehand because I feel it makes it more organic. I always have an idea of what I'm going for or where I want them to end up but most of the actual process happens with them in the room. This was an enriching experience and I hope this piece made you feel something today.
