Connie Kim-Sheng

Visual Arts, Piano

Connie Kim-Sheng was born to musical parents in La Crescenta, California. She began taking piano lessons at three years old with her mother, and has not looked back since. Her passion for performance has taken her around the world for competitions and concerts; she has been successful at numerous international competitions, such as the New Orleans Competition, Los Angeles Liszt Competition, and Virginia Waring Competition.

After completing ten years of study with John Perry, both privately and through the Glenn Gould School in Toronto, Canada, she completed her Master’s Degree in piano performance at the New England Conservatory under the tutelage of Hung-Kuan Chen and Meng-Chieh Liu. After spending some time in Boston, she decided to return to sunny California for her doctorate at USC Thornton School of Music in order to study with Jeffrey Kahane. She is learning harpsichord with Lucinda Carver, conducting with Larry Livingston, and also holds a TA position in the piano department.

At thirteen years old, Connie was exposed to manga and anime for the first time. The first manga she ever read was Fruits Basket! This new world opened up her world to drawing digitally. She always loved doodling pretty girls and fashion; exposure to this anime style, along with the community of deviantArt, inspired her to draw even more. Her current tool of choice is the iPad with the apple pencil and the free MediBang drawing app.
